The First Greater Bay Area “Respect Teachers” Life Education Writing Competition

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised “The First Greater Bay Area ‘Respect Teachers’ Life Education Writing Competition” to promote respect for teachers and inspire students to understand the core value of morality. The competition received more than 1,300 contributions from students in 150 primary and secondary schools. The winners were selected by professional judges and their awards were presented in an online award ceremony.

Attending the ceremony were Professor John Lee Chi-kin, Vice President (Academic) and Provost and Director of the Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education (CRSE); Dr Wang Lixun, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (FHM); and Professor Si Chung-mou, Head of the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL); who shared the joyous moment with the winners and more than a hundred of schools and families.

Professor Lee said, “EdUHK has always worked closely with schools and communities to promote life and moral education and to cultivate positive values and morality through the learning of the traditional Chinese virtue of respecting teachers.”

Dr Wang expressed gratitude to the schools for their support and participation, which allowed the competition to be held successfully despite the pandemic. Professor Si introduced a related EdUHK project, namely “Learning History through Watching Animation”, to demonstrate how to inspire students to learn Chinese history and culture by watching lively animations of the life stories of 10 Chinese historical figures.

The competition was organised by FHM, CHL, and CRSE. Leading experts, including Professor Wang Ning from Beijing Normal University, were invited to act as consultants for the competition. The participants were categorised in four groups (junior primary, senior primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary) and were requested to submit an essay on the theme of “respecting teachers”.

More details of the competition are available at the CHL website.
