Professor Westad argues that the Origins of the Cold War predate the traditional view taht the Cold War started in 1945. He argues that it began in the late nineteenth century with the Industrial Revolution. He emphasizes that the Cold War was very much a global struggle, with much of the action going on in the “Third World” (Developing World), while the traditional view was the Cold War was a Soviet-American confrontation, and the setting was mostly Europe. He also contends that ideology played a huge role throughout, going back to the 19th century; and that US played a greater role than the Soviet Union.
