文学和摄影经常被认为是姊妹艺术，它们的混合性可见于摄影 (Photography) 的词源，即「以光书写」。尽管不少学者已研究过两者在制作方面的共通之处，可是针对文学作品中以摄影作比喻或象征的研究却仍见贫乏。 本研究正是旨在离开一般只集中在文字和影像之关系的学研方向，并将焦点转移至影像在文学作品中以口述或叙述的存在形式和作用。部份学者曾提出影像有其文本性：它们能被阅读和阐释(Mitchell 1995, Petit 2006)，但仍未有研究分析过文本中被叙述的影像
