The 11th East-Asian Graduate Forum on Teaching Chinese as an International Language launched on July 30, 2021 via Zoom at EdUHK. With the rise of online academic interaction as the general trend, the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) moves with the times and take advantage of information technology to connect with the international community, enabling young scholars in the field of teaching Chinese as an international language (TCIL) to meet and exchange ideas.

The Forum hosted by CHL, co-organised by the CKC Centre for the Development of Information Technology in Chinese Language Teaching (CKC Centre) and the Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as an International Language programme (MATCIL) by the Faculty of Humanities (FHM). Dr TSE Ka Ho, Director of CKC Centre chaired the opening ceremony. Dr LIANG Yuan, Acting Head of CHL, and Prof LO Sing Kai, Associate Vice President (Assessment) and Dean of Graduate School of EdUHK, delivered opening speeches, recognising the efforts of the Forum in strengthening regional collaboration and hoping that scholars and postgraduates could leverage this online Forum for constructive discussions on teaching Chinese as an international language.

The Forum invited Prof FURUKAWA Yutaka from Osaka University, Prof TSENG Chin-Chin from National Taiwan Normal University and Prof SI Chung Mou from the Education University of Hong Kong as keynote speakers. They are experts and pioneers of TCIL, whose speeches drew more than 170 views during the Forum. The Forum brought together more than 90 postgraduates and practitioners from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Hong Kong. 60 papers were presented in a total of 15 sessions. Scholars addressed issues on curriculum design, teaching and learning, acquisition, linguistic and cultural comparison, inter-cultural communication, teaching material, modern educational technology, profession training, international exchange, International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, etc. Besides, students from ‘Advanced Workshop on IB Concepts and Teaching Chinese as a Second Language 2021’, organised by CHL, were invited to participate and share their instructional designs and teaching experiences on IB Concepts and teaching Chinese during two presentation sessions.

Teaching Chinese as an International Language has become a spotlighted education theme on the global stage. This Forum encouraged scholars and teachers to exchange innovative ideas and field practices. As a new endeavour for online academic of scholarly ideas, this Forum joined efforts with East-Asian practitioners in the field to provide references for TCIL, and promotes academic exchange among the region and around the world as a precedent.
