EdUHK Strengthens ASEAN Partnerships through Visits to Brunei and Malaysia
A delegation led by Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), visited Brunei Darussalam (Brunei) from 31 October to 4 November 2026 to strengthen collaboration with higher education institutions, education authorities and community partners across ASEAN. The visit reinforced EdUHK’s commitment to advancing teacher education, educational leadership, research collaboration and talent development in the region.
The delegation included Professor Michelle Gu Mingyue, Assistant Vice President (Research); Professor Kevin Chan Ka-shing, Acting Dean of Faculty of Education and Human Development; and Dr Faye Wang Yifei, Project Manager of Internationalisation.
A key highlight of the visit was Professor Lee’s keynote address at the Brunei Darussalam Teachers’ Day Conference 2026, delivered at the invitation of the Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam. The conference brought together education leaders, policymakers and practitioners to exchange insights on teacher development, educational innovation and evidence-based practices.
In his keynote speech entitled “Reimagining Education for a Dynamic Future”, Professor Lee highlighted how rapid technological, social, environmental and economic changes had brought new challenges to teaching and learning. He emphasised that educational transformation should extend beyond technology adoption to embrace core educational values, local contexts and ethical responsibility. He called for the cultivation of adaptable learners and educators equipped with critical thinking, creativity and strong ethical judgement to thrive in an increasingly complex world.
Meanwhile, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin also participated with Professor Gu Michelle Mingyue and Professor Kevin Chan Ka-shing in the “Learning Circle with Main Keynote Speaker” interactive session, exchanging educational perspectives and practical experiences with participants. Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, presented a commemorative plaque to Professor John Lee Chi-Kin in the presence of Her Honour Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) of the Ministry of Education in Brunei.
The engagement further strengthened EdUHK’s relationship with Brunei’s Ministry of Education and the local education community, laying a foundation for future collaboration in teacher education, school leadership, professional development, educational research and capacity building.
During the visit to Malaysia, the delegation met with representatives of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) and visited five leading higher education institutions: Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Taylor’s University, UCSI University and Sunway University. Discussions focused on a range of strategic areas, including teacher education, academic research, student and faculty exchanges, educational technology, and music and performing arts, exploring opportunities for collaboration while deepening EdUHK’s connections with the Malaysian education sector.
The delegation’s meeting with Huazong also facilitated exchanges on cultural and educational links between Hong Kong and Malaysia, while exploring potential collaboration in teacher training, lifelong learning and community education.
The visits reflect EdUHK’s continued efforts to foster impactful and mutually beneficial partnerships across ASEAN. Leveraging its strengths in education, teacher development, research and knowledge transfer, the University will continue to work closely with regional partners in promoting educational innovation, talent development and academic exchange, contributing to the advancement of education in the region.
