EdUHK Runners Unite for 2026 Hong Kong Marathon
Celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the University’s Retitling
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK)’s retitling, hundreds of EdUHK students, staff, elite athletes and alumni united to form the “EdUHK Hong Kong Marathon Running Team” and took part in today’s (18 January) citywide event – the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. Under the theme “Run for Education Futures”, EdUHK runners demonstrated support for the University, adding splendour to this milestone celebration.
As a pioneer of an “Elite Athlete-Friendly University” in Hong Kong, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin led senior management, faculty and students to cheer on the runners, showcasing the EdUHK community's unity and dynamism.
The “EdUHK Hong Kong Marathon Running Team” featured a strong line-up. In addition to Council member Dr Henry Ho Kin-chung and Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing-ho, the team also included distinguished alumni and athletes, such as Mr Wong Kam-po, three-time Asian Games individual road race gold medalist in road cycling and alumnus; Ms Yuen Sin-ying, badminton athlete, ambassador of EdUHK’s “Elite Athlete-Friendly University” initiative and alumnus; Mr Kwok Ka-wai, alumnus who competed in canoeing at the Asian Games and National Games; and Ms Cheng Sui-man, former news anchor and alumnus. In the newly introduced “University Challenge Cup,” EdUHK fielded 12 athletes to compete alongside peers from other local universities.
To support the runners, EdUHK set up a booth at the Victoria Park Handball Court, offering baggage storage and rest space, while deploying student cheering squads to encourage participants along the route. Runners donned T-shirts in EdUHK’s signature orange, symbolising unity and the passing of the torch across generations. After completing their races at different times, athletes gathered at this ‘support station’ to rest and connect. They were offered a gift bag from the University, and joined President Lee and the University team for photo taking, creating warm and lasting memories.
Professor Lee said: “I am grateful to our students, staff and alumni for their enthusiastic participation. Today, we have demonstrated not only sportsmanship, but also the core values of unity, passion and perseverance. Through the marathon, we hope to showcase EdUHK’s young and vibrant spirit, upholding the educational heritage while continuing to ‘Run for Education Futures’ with professionalism and innovation.”
EdUHK has long emphasised holistic development and the physical and mental well-being of its community. In the lead-up to the marathon, the University organised a series of activities including the “EdUHK Campus Run” and “Marathon Preparation Workshop”, covering long-distance training, mindset management and nutrition, with Mr Kwan Kee, Chairman of the Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates, sharing insights into the planning and execution of major sports events in Hong Kong. Yesterday, Professor Amy Ha Sau-ching, Head of the Department of Health and Physical Education and Dr Lobo Louie Hung-tak, Senior Lecturer, were invited by the Marathon organiser to host seminars, where they shared professional advice on family running and post-exercise recovery.
Meanwhile, at another EdUHK event “Caring Together Walkathon” held last Saturday, the University staged the official Kick-off Ceremony for the EdUHK Hong Kong Marathon Running Team.
