President of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung concluded today (12 October) a week-long visit to Moscow,  Nizhny Novgorod and St Petersburg in Russia, addressing over 40 pedagogical university heads across the country by making reference to EdUHK’s transformation experience.

The visit was arranged at the invitation of the Department of State Policy in Higher Education (ФУМО ВО) in Russia, a nationwide expert body representing the Russian pedagogical universities and their rectors, who are contemplating changes and the way forward for its teacher education system in tandem with the country’s socioeconomic developments.

Professor Cheung briefed his Russian counterparts on the University’s academic growth and evolvement from a mono-technic education institute to an education-focused, multidisciplinary university with strong research capacity, ranking among the world’s top 10 in Education. He went on to elaborate on how EdUHK strategised its priorities and resources in making an impact in the local, regional and global education arenas.

Accompanied by Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Lui Tai-lok and Associate Vice President (Graduate Studies) Professor Lo Sing-kai, Professor Cheung also met with the rectors and senior representatives of Moscow State University of Psychology and Education, National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE), Moscow City University, Kozma Minin Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University (Minin University), and Herzen State Pedagogical University to explore future collaboration.

Professor Cheung said, “Education transcends boundaries. I feel deeply honoured to share our unique experience with our Russian counterparts while contributing our expertise in teacher education to the world’s largest Eurasian country. Such exchanges are mutually beneficial, and I hope EdUHK’s transformation story could provide new perspectives in bringing about positive changes.”

EdUHK has been proactive in extending its reach to Belt and Road countries to share its knowledge and expertise in education. Last October, EdUHK was appointed by the World Bank to provide consultancy services for the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training, with the objective of promoting the continuous professional development of teachers in Vietnam. In 2016 and 2017, teacher professional development programmes and workshops were organised in Kazakhstan, Belarus and the Philippines.
