EdUHK Hosts Flag-Raising Ceremony to Inaugurate 2026/27 Academic Year
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) formally inaugurated the 2026/27 academic year with a Flag-Raising Ceremony held at its Tai Po campus today (1 September). The occasion was attended by over 1,000 new students and staff, marking the official commencement of the new academic year.
Distinguished guests included Mr Zheng Jinpeng, Inspector II of the Department of Educational and Youth Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); EdUHK Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum; President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin; Vice President (Academic) Professor May Cheng May-hung; Vice President (Research and Development) Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin; Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong Wing‑ho; together with Associate Vice Presidents, Assistant Vice Presidents, Deans, and Department Heads. Dr Dennis Koo Hok-chun, President of the Northcote College of Education Past Students’ Association, and Mrs Koo, as well as Mr and Mrs Lee Pak-keong, Chairperson of the Grantham College of Education Past Students’ Association, were also in attendance.
A Flag-Raising team comprising students from EdUHK, EdUHK Jockey Club Primary School, and Pentecostal Church of HK Tai Wo Nursery School was specially invited to participate. As the national flag was raised, guests and participants joined in singing the national anthem, creating a solemn and dignified atmosphere to usher in the new academic year.
Ms Imma Ling said it was especially meaningful to join the ceremony with staff and students on the 10th anniversary of EdUHK’s retitling. She said, “Over the past decade, EdUHK has steadily advanced from its foundation of ‘Education-plus’ towards the vision of ‘Education Futures’. We have continuously enriched our academic portfolio, evolving into a university that nurtures diverse talents while enhancing our international reputation. Looking ahead, I hope EdUHK will continue to uphold its educational mission, foster Hong Kong’s advancement into an international education hub, and contribute to the nation’s high-quality development.”
Professor John Lee Chi-Kin congratulated and welcomed the new students, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and shape their own future. “Though young in name, EdUHK inherits over a century of educational legacy. Guided by our core mission of ‘Education Futures’ and ‘Cultivating Virtue’, we integrate rigorous educational foundations with interdisciplinary learning, spanning new fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Digital Governance, National Security Law, New Media, E-Sports Management, and Sustainable Development, to nurture versatile talents who can make a real impact on society. I hope our students will face challenges with courage, and make full use of EdUHK’s resources and opportunities to transform their aspirations into reality – contributing to Hong Kong SAR of China, the nation and beyond.”
