In his address, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi‑Kin noted that the ceremony was being held in the 10th anniversary year of the University's retitling, a significant milestone in its history. He paid tribute to the seven award recipients, whose contributions to academia, public policy, environmental sustainability and industry have made a lasting impact on the HKSAR, the nation and the world, and embody the values the University community holds dear. “Each of our distinguished honourees exemplifies the transformative power of visionary leadership, selfless service and unwavering dedication. Their lifetime achievements serve as guiding beacons to our students and graduates, and stand as living testaments to the core values that the University strives to cultivate across our institution: nurturing talents and promoting education; transforming and actualising lives.”
Professor Lee said the University was deeply honoured to confer honorary doctorates upon three distinguished visionaries. He remarked that Professor Ambrose King is a world renowned sociologist and educator whose extensive scholarship and pioneering studies on modernisation and Chinese society bridges Chinese and Western intellectual traditions, and has profoundly influenced the development of sociology in China. Legislative Council President Dr the Hon Starry Lee has devoted more than a quarter of a century to public service, advancing housing, education and youth development while striving to enhance people’s well-being and strengthen district governance. Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer, through his seminal work on organisational power and resource dependence, has redefined modern management and advocated more humane and equitable workplaces. Together, the three Honorary Doctors have made outstanding contributions to knowledge innovation, talent cultivation and social progress, leaving a legacy that will endure for generations.
Professor Lee also congratulated the four Honorary Fellowship recipients. The Hon George Lau has long been committed to youth development, actively building cross-boundary exchange platforms and creating valuable internship and learning opportunities for tens of thousands of young people. Mrs Mei Ng has provided visionary leadership in environmental conservation for more than four decades, championing decarbonisation and inspiring younger generations to pursue green innovation. The Hon Jimmy Ng, a prominent solicitor, has long served the Hong Kong community, making significant contributions across the legal, financial and industrial sectors. Renowned entrepreneur Mr Irons Sze has been a steadfast supporter of local higher education while actively promoting regional economic integration. Collectively, the four leaders have made important contributions to societal development and the nurturing of future generations.
EdUHK has conferred Honorary Fellowships since 2009 and Honorary Doctorates since 2016 to recognise individuals of eminence in society. Recipients include scholars and professionals dedicated to advancing education as well as leaders of distinction from a wide range of professional, industrial and business sectors.
