EdUHK Holds Honorary Doctorate and Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) today (26 September) held the Honorary Doctorate and Honorary Fellowship Conferment Ceremony on its Tai Po campus. Presided over by EdUHK Council Chairman Dr David Wong Yau-kar, the ceremony was held to confer five honorary doctorates and an honorary fellowship on six distinguished individuals, in recognition of their remarkable contributions in advancing education and dedication to public service. They are (in alphabetical order by surname):


Honorary Doctorates

  • Professor James J. Gross
  • Professor Lawrence J. Lau, GBS, JP
  • Professor Justin Yifu Lin
  • Professor Kishore Mahbubani
  • Professor Michael E. Mann


Honorary Fellowship

  • The Venerable Kuan Yun, BBS, MH


Addressing the ceremony, EdUHK President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin paid tribute to all the recipients for their selfless dedication and outstanding contributions in various fields, including education, economic development, diplomacy, environmental stewardship, and community services. They are exemplary figures in driving social progress.


He said, “Professor James Gross’s ground-breaking process model has established a foundational framework for affective science, inspiring research across an extensive range of fields; Professor Lawrence Lau has held key advisory roles and has served extensively in higher education. His contributions have significantly shaped the landscape of economics and policy development; Professor Justin Lin’s strategic counsel has been instrumental in shaping China’s economic policies and driving its remarkable growth trajectory; Professor Kishore Mahbubani’s tenure as Singapore’s ambassador to the United Nations, including terms as Security Council’s President, reflects his influential role on the global stage; Professor Michael E. Mann’s pioneering research and relentless efforts to elevate public understanding have profoundly shaped the global discourse on climate change.”


Professor Lee added, “The Venerable Kuan Yun has long been devoted to education and social welfare. He exemplifies the compassionate spirit of the Buddha, bringing profound benefit to the people of Hong Kong.”


Since 2009, EdUHK has conferred Honorary Fellowships, and since 2016, Honorary Doctorates, to recognise distinguished individuals in society. These have included principals and teachers who have dedicated their talent and efforts to education, scholars and professionals who have actively promoted educational development, and outstanding leaders in various professions and business sectors.
