EdUHK Holds 2026 National Security Education Day Flag-Raising Ceremony
Strengthening National Security Awareness and Identity Among Students and Staff
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) held a flag-raising ceremony this morning (April 15) at its Tai Po campus to mark the year’s National Security Education Day (NSED). In alignment with this year’s NSED’s theme, “Proactively Align with the 15th Five-Year Plan Follow a Holistic Approach to Development and Security”, the ceremony aimed to reinforce national security awareness and strengthen the sense of national identity among the University community.
Guests attending the ceremony included EdUHK Council Deputy Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum, Council members, President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, senior management, faculty and student representatives. Also present were Mr Zheng Yu Hua, Division Chief from the New Territories Sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Ms Queenie Wong, Senior Liaison Officer in the Tai Po District Office of the Home Affairs Department; as well as Tai Po District Council members Mr Chan Yung-wa, Mr Mui Siu-fung, Mr Wong Wai-tung and Mr Wu Cheuk-him, also the Founding President of the Greater Bay Area Education Integrative Development Think Tank Mr Ronald Chan.
In addition to EdUHK Jockey Club Primary School and EdUHK Early Childhood Learning Centre, representatives from Pentecostal Church of Hong Kong Tai Wo Nursery School, Dawning Views Elementi English Kindergarten, HK & Kowloon Kai Fong Women's Association Sun Fong Chung Kindergarten, and Yan Oi Tong Mrs Cheng Ting Kong Kindergarten were also invited to the ceremony.
The ceremony commenced with the EdUHK student flag-raising team marching in with the national flag, regional flag, and university flag. Attendees stood in solemn observance as the flags were raised to the national anthem.
Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah remarked, “Safeguarding national security is the responsibility of every citizen. As we enter the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan, EdUHK will continue to uphold its mission of nurturing professionals, instilling positive values and a correct sense of national identity in the younger generation, serving as a role model for society, and promoting the spirit of patriotism and love for the HKSAR.”
Professor John Lee Chi-Kin added, “At this pivotal moment marking the launch of the 15th Five-year Plan, EdUHK will stand united with our staff and students. We will remain vigilant in a rapidly changing world, closely aligning with the nation’s development direction, we will abide by the law and work together to safeguard national security. We are determined to become patriotic citizens who contribute to both our country and the HKSAR.”
EdUHK was the first university to establish the National Security and Legal Education Research Centre in early 2024, it set up the Working Group on National and National Security Education later to formulate university-wide measures and guidelines for assessing student learning outcomes. In recent days, EdUHK has joined hands with the Yau Tsim Mong, Eastern, Tai Po and Wan Chai districts to organise a series of activities, enabling members of the public to learn about, experience and promote national security.
