EdUHK Delegation Visits Europe Signs MoUs with Three Leading Universities in the Netherlands and Hungary

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) delegation, led by President Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, visited four renowned universities in Europe between 23 and 27 March 2026. The institutions included Leuphana University in Germany, the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and the University of Debrecen and Eötvös Loránd University in Hungary. During the visit, EdUHK signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the University of Groningen, the University of Debrecen, and Eötvös Loránd University.
Under the MoUs, EdUHK and its partner institutions will promote joint research and academic collaboration, facilitate student exchange and staff mobility, and co-organise conferences and seminars. These agreements further expand EdUHK’s higher education cooperation network in Europe.
Professor Lee remarked, “The signing of these MoUs lays a solid foundation for deepening academic exchange and research collaboration with our partner institutions, as we pursue excellence together. By joining hands to advance quality education and talent development, these partnerships will reinforce EdUHK’s leadership in higher education in the Asia–Pacific region and internationally, while strengthening connections between Europe and China.” He also highlighted EdUHK’s mission to drive internationalisation, expand global collaboration, and contribute to educational transformation across Belt-and-Road countries.
At the University of Groningen, the MoU was signed by Professor Lee and Professor Jouke de Vries, President of the University of Groningen. The delegation also met with senior leadership and faculty members from the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences to discuss student exchange programmes, PhD co-supervision, and research collaboration in teacher education and multilingual education. Under the agreement, the University of Groningen will become a partner institution in EdUHK’s International Outreach Study Programme. In July, 20 EdUHK doctoral students will travel to Groningen to attend the five-day “Summer School in Effective Teaching for the Future.”
The visit also marked Professor Lee’s first official trip to Hungary since assuming the presidency of EdUHK. He signed MoUs with Professor Károly Pető, Vice-Rector for General Affairs of the University of Debrecen and Professor Lénárd Darázs, Rector of Eötvös Loránd University. The delegation met with senior leadership and academics from the Faculties of Humanities and Confucius Institutes at both universities to explore collaboration in PhD co-supervision, joint academic conferences, and research in psychology, linguistics, shadow education, and the teaching of Chinese language and culture in Hungary. As Hungary was the first European country to sign a Belt-and-Road cooperation document with China, these partnerships mark an important milestone in EdUHK’s Belt-and-Road education collaboration initiative.
Members of the EdUHK delegation included Professor Michelle Gu, Assistant Vice President (Research); Professor Glenn Stockwell of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies; Ms Teresa Poon, Assistant Registrar of the Graduate School; and Ms Hilton Cheung, Senior Secretary of the Office of the President.
