Hong Kong STEM Olympiad 2016

You or your representatives are cordially invited to cover the Hong Kong STEM Olympiad 2016 to be held this Friday (8 July) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK).

The STEM Olympiad is one of the major Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) events jointly organised by the Department of Science and Environmental Studies, Department of Mathematics and Information Technology and Centre for Education in Environmental Sustainability at EdUHK. Co-organisers and major supporters include the Hong Kong Association of Science and Mathematics Education, Hong Kong Education City, the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers – Environmental Division and the Education Bureau (EDB) of the HKSAR Government, among others.

Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, Secretary for Education, will be the guest of honour at the closing ceremony.

In response to the recommendations and strategies for promoting STEM education among schools in Hong Kong as proposed by the EDB/Curriculum Development Council in 2015, the Hong Kong STEM Olympiad 2016 aims to create an atmosphere conducive to teaching and learning STEM in secondary schools, and to raise teachers’ and students’ awareness of the importance of STEM education.

The STEM Olympiad is a territory-wide competition at which 700 Secondary 5 to 6 students and teachers from around 100 local secondary schools will participate. Participating students will take part in STEM related “Knowledge Challenge” and “Innovations in Practice Challenge” sessions to solve a series of problems and create an artifact to demonstrate their knowledge and skills without prior training and preparation. A STEM forum and workshops on teacher professional development will also be held for the participating teachers.
