EdUHK Council Chairman Encourages Youths to Apply Critical Thinking and Embrace Diversity

Dr David Wong Yau-kar, Council Chairman of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), was invited to be the officiating guest at the 37th Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition Finals on 4 May 2022.

In his keynote speech, Dr Wong said the competition was a major event in the school sector, adding that it was gratifying to see the participating teams have in-person finals amidst the pandemic.

He encouraged young people to consider and analyse issues from other people’s perspectives and to think critically to resist the surge in binary thinking and the confrontational atmosphere in society. Together with blurring the line between fact and fiction in the digital age, this has regrettably hindered rational deliberation of major social issues in recent years, Dr Wong added.

Quoting ancient Chinese sayings (“君子和而不同” and “海納百川”), Dr Wong concluded his speech with a take-home message on the importance of embracing diversity, harmony and mutual respect, which are timeless values applicable in modern times.
