Professor LADEGAARD, Hans J
Head, Department of English Language Education
2948 7206
Professor Hans J Ladegaard’s broad areas of research interest are sociolinguistics, the social psychology of language, and intercultural communication. He focuses particularly on language attitudes and stereotypes, language and migration, language and gender, attitudes and motivation in foreign language learning, and discourse analysis. Additionally, Professor Ladegaard is also interested in combining quantitative approaches to the study of language and communication (surveys and corpora) with qualitative approaches (discourse analysis and narratology), and to explore how research on language and (intercultural) communication can translate into social action and equitable education. His most recent research has centred on three thematically diverse areas: 1) trauma in migrant domestic workers’ storytelling, 2) Chinese and international students’ experience of intercultural encounters in Hong Kong universities, and 3) English language teachers’ attitudes towards Hong Kong English.
