Five EdUHK Academics Selected as Mentors under Hong Kong Scholars Program 2026

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) is pleased to announce that five distinguished scholars have been selected as mentors in the Hong Kong Scholars Program 2026 (Programme). With the highest success rate among the nine participating institutions, the mentors will guide five postdoctoral fellows from the Chinese Mainland in conducting cutting-edge research, further strengthening academic exchange and collaboration across the region.
Jointly organised by the Society of Hong Kong Scholars and the China National Postdoctoral Council under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the programme seeks to integrate talent resources and research strengths between the Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, nurturing high-calibre postdoctoral researchers in experimental sciences, engineering, and related fields.
This year, EdUHK nominated ten scholars, of whom five were successfully selected. Their expertise spans artificial intelligence (AI), psychology, environmental science, emerging chemicals, air pollution, and neuroscience—underscoring the University’s diverse strengths in interdisciplinary research.
Professor Chetwyn Chan Che-hin, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, remarked, “This achievement highlights EdUHK’s competitive edge in interdisciplinary research and reaffirms our commitment to nurturing future research talent. The five scholars will provide professional guidance to the selected postdoctoral fellows, drawing on their international vision and expertise. Through cross-regional collaboration, they will foster knowledge sharing, strengthen research capacity in both Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, and extend our global academic influence.”
The five selected EdUHK mentors and projects (in official order):
Professor Xu Guandong – Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence; ranked among Stanford’s global top 2% scientists in AI. Recognised for pioneering applications of data-driven and AI technologies to address real-world challenges in education, e-commerce, finance, healthcare, and other domains.
Funded project: SimTrain: LLM-VR-Empowered Pre-Service Teacher Training Simulation System Development based on Multi-Agent Technology.
Dr Liman Li Man-wai – Associate Professor, Department of Psychology. Specialises in mental health, decision-making processes, and social relationships from a socio-ecological perspective.
Funded project: Depression Symptoms: A Social-Network Perspective.
Dr Deng Wenjing – Associate Professor, Department of Science and Environmental Studies. Focuses on emerging chemicals and exposure risks, airborne chemicals and bio-aerosols, and management of indoor air quality in school environments and health impacts on students. Her research advances understanding of how endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and veterinary antibiotics in food and the environment affect human health.
Funded project: Indoor Airborne Plastic Particles and Co-existing Toxins: Characterization and Exposure to Children.
Professor Ho Wing-kei – Professor, Department of Science and Environmental Studies; ranked among Stanford’s global top 2% scientists in physical chemistry. Research interests include environmental remediation, nanotechnology, solar photocatalysis, air pollution control. He has secured over HK$15 million in research funding from the Hong Kong SAR Government and published more than 260 papers in international journals.
Funded project: A Step Towards Cleaner Air and Energy: Design of Advanced Photocatalytic Materials for Sustainable Pollution Control and Energy Generation.
Professor Ken Yung Kin-lam – Chair Professor of Biology and Neuroscience; ranked among Stanford’s global top 2% scientists in neurology. His team has developed nanomaterial-based technologies for harvesting autologous neural stem cells and devices for cell differentiation, winning over 50 international innovation awards. Several of these innovations have been patented in the Chinese Mainland, the United States, Europe, and Hong Kong.
Funded project: Study of TWIK2 channel as the Key Therapeutic Target for Parkinson’s Disease.
