EdUHK Hosts Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration to Foster Cultural Exchange Among Local and International Students
The Global Affairs Office (GAO) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) hosted a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration on 23 September, bringing together some 70 exchange and local students from Brazil, the Chinese Mainland, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Macao SAR China, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden. Through traditional games and a mooncake-making workshop, participants gained insights into the festival’s history and traditions while experiencing the charm of Chinese culture.
In his welcome address, Professor Lee Kwai-sang, Acting Director of Global Affairs, said that the values embodied in the Mid-Autumn Festival, including reunion, gratitude, harmony and sharing, helped strengthen community bonds, which align with the University’s commitment to international exchange and intercultural understanding. He encouraged students to participate in different activities, learn more about Chinese culture and make friends with students from other cultures. Dr Henry Ho Kin-chung, Council Member of EdUHK, encouraged students to make the most of their exchange experience by engaging in campus life and exploring Hong Kong’s diverse culture.
The celebration featured a variety of activities, including introductions to the history, legends and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival, such as the stories of Chang’e, Houyi and the Jade Rabbit. Students also learnt about traditional celebrations such as moongazing, family reunions, lantern displays and fire dragon dances, as well as Hong Kong’s signature Mid-Autumn events – the Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival at Victoria Park, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance and the Pok Fu Lam Village Fire Dragon Dance.
Interactive games such as lantern riddles and word puzzles added to the festive atmosphere. A highlight was when students made snow-skin mooncakes under the guidance of an instructor. Afterwards, participants sampled the traditional and snow-skin varieties while sharing festive customs and cultural traditions from their home countries and regions.
Through a wide range of multicultural activities, EdUHK promotes intercultural understanding and strengthens connections within its diverse community. The Mid-Autumn Festival celebration both deepened students’ understanding of Chinese culture and Hong Kong’s festive traditions, and provided valuable opportunities to learn from one another, build friendships and connect beyond the classroom.
