​Abstract

Food and plastic wastes constitute 63% of municipal solid waste in Hong Kong. The objective of this project was to investigate the social and psychological controls on citizen’s performance on 3Rs’ (reducing, reusing, and recycling) behaviours on food and plastic wastes in Hong Kong based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). TPB had been widely adopted to study recycling attitudes and behavior. Yet, few research has been conducted to investigate the reduce, reuse and recycle of food and plastic waste. To answer this research gap, an on-street structured survey with 996 permanent residents of Hong Kong was conducted. The findings can be useful in assisting policy makers to optimize waste minimization in the realm of education campaigns, technological development and legislation with reference to sustainable waste management in Hong Kong. More importantly, the study had implication for helping identify an effective means for shaping Hong Kong people’s perception towards waste minimisation in the future. The contents of this seminar are based on the findings of the Dean Research Fund project entitled “Public Perception on Food and Plastic Waste Minimisation & Barriers to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Behaviour in Hong Kong”.
