Abstract
Traffic congestion is one of the major problems in a metropolis like Hong Kong. Most major routes are congested in peak hours. As the number of vehicles and the complexity of traffic system are expected to increase, appropriate strategies have to be devised to deal with the problems. To devise appropriate strategies, we first employ cellular
automata, a simple discrete model extensively studied in various fields, to understand the behaviors and the dynamics of transportation networks. In this seminar, I will briefly describe the current traffic status of Hong Kong based on the average vehicle speed data taken at various major roads and tunnels, and then illustrate how cellular automata can be used to study transportation networks.
About the Speaker
Tai Tak Shing is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Science and Environmental Studies of The Education University of Hong Kong. He is pursuing his PhD degree under the supervision of Dr. Yeung Chi Ho. His research focuses on the study of transportation networks with cellular automata.
