A two-hour guest lecture for LIT 3047 Literatures in English: Poetry, the session will introduce students to the speaker’s expanded and creative approaches to translating ancient Chinese poetry into English, framing translation not as a secondary or corrective act but as a generative poetic practice in its own right. The second part of the lecture will focus on the speaker’s new book, Mistranslations from a Future Vernacular, which poses the provocation: “How many times can you rewrite a poem?” The speaker will discuss the book as an exploration of iterative rewriting and exhaustion as method, drawing on experimental procedures associated with Oulipo alongside more contemporary technological interventions.

About the Speaker

Daryl Lim Wei Jie is an award-winning poet, editor, translator and literary critic based in Singapore. His collection of poetry includes Mistranslations from a Future Vernacular (2025), Anything but Human (2021), and A Book of Changes (2016). He conceptualised and co-edited the celebrated anthologies Food Republic: A Singapore Literary Banquet (2020), and The Second Link: An Anthology of Malaysian and Singaporean Writing (2023). In 2023, he received the Young Artist Award, Singapore's highest honour for artists under 35.
