Learning from SARS and Beyond

The QEF Secondary Teaching Evaluation and Mentoring Project focuses on developing teaching and mentoring skills among Hong Kong secondary school teachers. The Project, jointly operated by the Centre for the Development of School Partnership and Field Experience, and the School of Creative Arts, Sciences and Technology, was granted $4.6 million, the second largest project award in the latest round of QEF bids. It aims to empower teachers in the five Key Learning Areas (KLAs) to improve the teaching and learning of their subjects with a specific focus on mentoring, peer review and lesson study. Lesson study is a systematic process of enquiry into teaching and learning, and draws on a theoretical framework developed over three years by a research team comprising school teachers and academics in Hong Kong.

The two-year project will involve 50 secondary schools which will become HKIEd partnership schools, working with Institute staff to create a collaborative and supportive culture for the professional development of the teachers involved. The aim is to support the development of an embedded culture of mentoring in collaborating schools. A senior teacher from each KLA will attend an intensive three-week "train the trainer" mentoring course from late October to mid November. This teacher will then lead lesson studies to improve the teaching and learning of the chosen KLA.

Multi-media training Multi-media training materials and a support manual will be developed to guide secondary schools in school-based implementation of lesson studies, lesson analysis and evaluation, mentoring and peer review. In addition, seminars will be held to disseminate the results of the Project. It is expected that approximately 1,000 secondary teachers working in some 150 schools will benefit.

QEF Project Mentoring and Peer Review: Supporting key skills for secondary school teachers Schools in Hong Kong play an increasingly important role in supporting and mentoring student teachers and beginning teachers. Peer review is vital for effective staff appraisal and school-based staff development. Secondary teachers need support in developing peer review and mentoring skills. This support is being provided by Institute staff with the assistance of the Quality Education Fund (QEF).
