Learning from SARS and Beyond

This was the first TLQPR undertaken by HKIEd. The Panel agreed that the mechanisms in place to ensure and promote quality teaching and learning in our programmes were comprehensive and rigorous. The culture of collegiality on campus and the positive educational experiences students gain at the Institute were highly commended. The Panel was very positive about the emphasis we place on field experience and the work of the Centre for the Development of School Partnership and Field Experience in support of this. The quality programmes run by the Division of Continuing Professional Education and its growth strategy were also remarked upon.

Professor Paul Morris, President of the Institute, responded to the report's very positive comments: "For a young institution undertaking its first TLQPR the review was an important, novel and challenging experience. The exercise has been important in helping us to further improve our processes and move closer to developing a culture where all individuals take responsibility for quality within a clearly understood and shared set of institutional policies and strategies."

The positive results of the TLQPR exercise have been instrumental in the UGC decision to conduct an Institutional Review (IR) of the Institute in October 2003. The IR will determine whether we have reached the level of maturity required to be accorded self-accrediting status. This will be a significant milestone in the Institute's development enabling us to offer new programmes without having to seek external permission to do so.

The fourteen-member TLQPR Panel, comprising local and overseas academics led by Professor Rosie Young, conducted a thorough review of the Institute's operations in June 2002. The report of the review was released last May. It was evident during the review itself that Panel members were impressed with what they saw and the report confirmed this.
