‘Landscapes of Emotions’: A Multimedia Art Co-learning Camp in Shui Hau Village

Continuing its commitment to sustainable humanities, the SUSHUM Project, under the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IRCCS), launched ‘Affective Landscapes: Creative Day Camp’ (「情動地景—創作日營」), a multimedia art co-learning programme for local young people running from April to July 2026. The programme invited a small group of young participants interested in creative expression and environmental issues to engage with ecological concerns through body movement, image-making, and text. 

On 24 and 25 May 2026, a two-day thematic camp was held at Shui Hau Village and the Village Hall on Lantau Island, inviting participants to explore non-human perspectives in situ. Performance artist Ms Alysa Leung guided participants in interacting with the land through body movement and writing, while photographer Mr Rain Yip introduced image expression through field walks and photography practice. Together, the mentors facilitated participants’ opening up bodily experience, connecting their emotions with the natural environment, and exploring human and non-human relationships through art. Working in a coastal landscape shaped by tides, salt winds, and mudflats, participants responded to the land through their chosen media, without the constraints of professional equipment or formal dance training. 

The camp concluded with peer critique sessions, where participants shared their creative outputs and submitted self-reflections. The participants' multimedia works were shared on social media and showcased at EdUHK in late July 2026, alongside a short performance by Ms Leung based on the collective creative output. By weaving field engagement with multimodal storytelling, the programme cultivated long-term responsibility towards more-than-human communities among Hong Kong's young creators.
