CLE Launches the Language Buddy Scheme

The Centre for Language in Education (CLE) is delighted to launch the Language Buddy Scheme in Semester 2 this year. Designed as an informal and engaging platform, the Scheme promotes language learning and intercultural exchange through meaningful peer interaction beyond the classroom.

Open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, the Scheme brings together learners of English, Cantonese, and Putonghua by pairing them as language buddies based on their language goals and interests. Welcoming sessions were held in February and March 2026 to introduce participants to their partners. Through a series of ice-breaking games, students quickly built rapport and actively interacted in their target languages in a lively and relaxed atmosphere.

Throughout the semester, monthly activities were organised at the ASLLC to encourage regular language exchange among participants. These activities, focusing on pronunciation practice and daily conversation, provided a low-pressure environment for students to take part in casual chitchat and role-plays. Participants were also encouraged to meet at least bi-weekly and complete the Buddy Challenge, which prompts partners to plan activities and undertake language tasks together, tailored to their individual learning needs.

Many participants shared that they joined the Scheme because they rarely have opportunities outside the classroom to meet with speakers of their target languages, highlighting its value as a much-needed platform for student bonding and linguistic exchange. Through this Scheme, CLE aims to create an inclusive language learning community where students build confidence and form meaningful, lasting connections.
