Visiting Scholar Prof Duan Jiangli Shares Expertise on Ming-Qing Literature

The Department of Literature and Cultural Studies’s Steering Committee for Classical Chinese Literature and Culture hosted Prof Duan Jiangli of Beijing Language and Culture University for an academic visit from 19 to 28 March 2026.

During her visit, Prof Duan delivered three well-received lectures on Ming-Qing literature to students from the Master of Arts in Chinese Studies (Language Education), Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Chinese Language), Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Language Studies, and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital Chinese Culture and Communication programmes. The lectures were titled: ‘Chen Meigong and the Culture of Reclusion Among Late-Ming “Shanren” ’ (從陳眉公看晚明「山人」之隱逸), ‘Interpreting the Portrait of the Daughters of Grand View Garden from a Modern Perspective’ (當代視野下大觀園女兒群像解讀), and ‘Dream of the Red Chamber and Traditional Chinese Family Ethics’ (《紅樓夢》與中國傳統家庭倫理).  The first lecture was specially designed for MACSLE students enrolled in LIT6074, while the two Redology lectures were open to the public.  All three sessions received very positive feedback from both students and the public.

In addition to her lectures, Prof Duan offered three consultation sessions for research postgraduate students, taught postgraduate students, and final-year undergraduate students. She shared valuable insights on career planning and cutting-edge research directions in Ming-Qing literature, offering inspiring advice that greatly benefited the students.
