A vibrant 2-day language and cultural exchange tour, titled ‘Cross-Cultural Amazing-Talker Language Exchange in GBA’, was organised under the UGC ‘Funding Scheme for Mainland and Global Engagement and Student Learning Experience’ from 27 to 28 September 2025. The event was led by the English and Putonghua teams from the Centre for Language in Education (CLE). This innovative programme brought together students from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) and The Dongguan University of Technology (DGUT) for an immersive cultural and language learning experience in the vibrant Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Over two days, students participated in interactive workshops conducted in both Putonghua and English, fostering meaningful language exchange and cross-cultural understanding. The activities, designed by five student ambassadors recruited from EdUHK, aimed to enhance students’ confidence in using both languages, promote cultural awareness, and build rapport among participants. Through engaging discussions, cultural presentations, and collaborative exercises, students not only improved their language skills but also developed a deeper appreciation and respect for each other's cultures.
Feedback collected from end-of-activity surveys highlighted the success of the programme. Many students expressed increased confidence in communicating in Putonghua and English, along with a heightened awareness of cultural diversity. They also reported feeling a stronger sense of belonging within the GBA community, recognising the importance of regional integration and mutual understanding.
This tour exemplifies how experiential learning can bridge cultural gaps, foster international collaboration, and enhance students' global competencies. It highlights the importance of such initiatives in developing open-minded, culturally aware individuals who are better equipped to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
