Local and overseas scholars in the symposium
The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK), in collaboration with Peking University and Hong Kong Baptist University, hosted the First International Symposium on the Frontiers of Chinese Linguistics from 8 to 9 June 2018 with the theme “Phonetic and Phonological Frontiers in Chinese Linguistics”.
Speaking at the opening, Professor Lui Tai Lok, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK, said, “Chinese language is a carrier of Chinese culture, and also the knowledge access key for Chinese people.” It is particularly meaningful to hold the symposium in Hong Kong, given its status as a nexus of Eastern and Western cultures, its geographical location, and its linguistic sophistication.
The symposium was graced by renowned speakers from Europe, Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the United States. The 17 papers presented delved into specific aspects of phonetic and phonological phenomena from both micro and macro perspectives, which converge to inform the direction of future research and development in Chinese linguistics.
Attended by more than 80 tertiary academics and students, other educators, scientists, technologists and humanists, the symposium served as a synergising platform for making academic research more socially relevant and impactful.
