Professor Qing Gu, Director of the UCL Centre for Educational Leadership and Professor of Leadership in Education, gives FEHD's final 2022 Distinguished Visiting Professor Lecture online.
The lecture, Shaping Futures of Education: Why Leadership Comes First, discusses the persistence of social and educational inequalities and presents four research-informed claims about successful school leadership and improvement.
Professor Gu examines the principal's role in using policies as opportunities to anchor the school's core values and regenerate capacities for further growth and development. She stresses that school leaders can design the social and intellectual conditions that engage the hearts and minds of teachers and their students and positively influence improvements and equity in their schools.
The lecture is followed by a discussion about how her ideas might apply to learning communities and schools, especially in Hong Kong. The panel also discusses what successful principalship entails and some of the challenges that principals face.
