Dr Ewan Wright on admissions practices in China

Times Higher Education (THE) ran a feature on a research that has traced the relationship between booming “international schools” in China, the national exam system and private agents who engage in unethical practices such as falsifying essays to help students on their path to overseas education.

Commenting on the issue, Dr Ewan Wright, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership, and the co-author of the article, said that universities may be intentionally oblivious to these practices.

Dr Ewan Wright on student entrepreneurship in China

China’s drive to encourage start-ups at universities could place undue risk on some students driven to open ventures without sufficient backing, especially if they come from less privileged backgrounds. Times Higher Education (THE) reported on a new research finding “raise ethical questions about the mass promotion of entrepreneurship in the absence of concrete support or due considerations of those who fail”.

Commenting on the issue, Dr Ewan Wright, Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Policy and Leadership said that we are not arguing that universities should discourage students from starting a business – rather that students should be made aware of the risks and, when promoted, given appropriate guidance and resources.
