‘What is your future dream school?’: A Dialogue Session with Teachers and Students from Salesian of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School

2022-04-12

The Department has recently co-organised a virtual dialogue session between Salesian of Don Bosco Ng Siu Mui Secondary School (SDBNSM) and EdUHK students on 12 April, 2022. Nine SDBNSM students from S2 to S5, together with vice-principal Ms. Celest Chan and fellow teachers Mr. Dominic Leung, Mr. Eddy Yan, Mr. Alvin Wong, and Ms. Natalie Chan joined the dialogue to share their views on the ideal ‘dream school’ and education of the 21st century with EdUHK students.

The session was part of the course EDA 4100 Rethinking and Reimagining Education offered by the Department, co-taught by Dr. Gail Yuen and Dr. Leung Wing Tat. The highlight of this course was the students’ construction of their own ‘dream school’ to attend to local needs and global developments, a learning artifact that best represents and integrates students’ education philosophy, and outlook for future schools.

The session had the central theme of ‘dream school investment’. Students from the course took the role as ‘dream school designers’ to present their works to students and teachers from SDBNSM, who were ‘education philanthropists’, each with an imagined HK$100 million capital for the investment. The whole session was filled with fruitful and insightful exchanges. SDBNSM students actively engaged with all the designers, asking thought-provoking questions surrounding the aspects of school environment, student development and wellbeing, overall schooling, and many more. They also provided many constructive suggestions to the designers, all of which were valuable input from a learner’s perspective. The dream school designers benefited just as much from SDBNSM teachers who generously offered lots of helpful advice based on their own experience in teaching and learning.

This dialogue, designed with experiential learning in mind, has generated unexpected insights and surprises for students and teachers from both sides. We want to express our sincere gratitude to SDBNSM for co-creating this wonderful experience.
