In a contributed article to the EdUHK Perspectives column of Sing Tao Daily, Dr Linda Kwan, Lecturer I of the Department of Psychology, said that the Russian psychologist, Lev Vygotsky's zone of proximal development (ZPD) theory (also known as the scaffolding theory) can be applied to improve children's learning process. The theory says that children can develop within the zone of proximal development (ZPD) with the help of more capable peers and friends or under adult guidance. The aim of education is to help children develop from their existing level to a higher level through guidance.
