Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies (LML).

LML was established in 2012 as a result of the restructuring of the former Faculty of Languages into the Faculty of Humanities (FHM). With a history of about a decade, LML has grown steadily and made contributions in the areas of teaching & learning, curriculum development, academic research, Knowledge Transfer, and student training.

LML offers a wide range of linguistics courses with an aim to provide subject knowledge to students in Education and Education-plus programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Besides courses on Chinese and English, LML also offers courses in Translation, French, Korean and Japanese to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism with an aim to raise students' global awareness. LML has also developed a number of Minor Programmes in French Studies, Japanese Studies, Translation, and Language and Society.

Colleagues in LML are active in academic research and Knowledge Transfer. The research projects undertaken by LML colleagues cover topics including corpus linguistics, language acquisition, sociolinguistics, language and gender, phonetics and phonology, Chinese linguistics, Cantonese studies, clinical linguistics, multilingualism, language assessment, and translation studies. Some of the research results have been further developed into Knowledge Transfer projects to bring about social impact and improvements to the community. Some examples include The Corpus-Aided Platform for Language Teachers (led by Dr Angel Ma), and The Corpus of Mid-20th Century Hong Kong Cantonese (led by Dr Andy Chin).

In the latest 2020 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), LML made remarkable achievements. 8% and 32% of colleagues’ research output were rated 4* (world leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) respectively. Compared to the result in 2014 RAE, there was 14% improvement on 4* and 3* research output. The impact case, with the theme of Corpus-based Studies of Cantonese, was rated 3* (i.e., with considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance) by the review panel.

Besides teaching and research, LML also provides training to undergraduate and postgraduates students to prepare them to enter the job markets. We explore internship opportunities for our students to gain experience in language related disciplines. We also supervise research postgraduate students in linguistics.
