Research Area(s):

I welcome prospective and current research postgraduate (RPg) students who are interested in language education and applied linguistics to join my research team. My research focuses particularly on Global Englishes including English as a lingua franca, translanguaging, informal digital learning of English, English-medium instruction (EMI), language policy and practice, intercultural communication, and development of language awareness and global citizenship through study abroad and other forms of international engagement.
My research focuses primarily on language education in higher education, while also extending to related issues in K–12 settings. I am interested in adopting a sociocultural perspective to examine how language education and communication is shaped by social, institutional, cultural, and ideological forces. I am also interested in research that explores how language education can become more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable, especially in relation to linguistic diversity, educational access, identity, power, and the responsible use of digital and AI technologies.
- My recent publications include edited volumes on critical perspectives on Global Englishes in language education, and policies, politics, ideologies, and pedagogies of English-medium instruction with a focus on Asian context. I have also published a monograph on re-positioning accent attitudes from the Global Englishes perspective. My work has appeared in leading journals such as TESOL Quarterly, System, Language Teaching, and Language Teaching Research. I have guest-edited several issues in journals including Applied Linguistics Review, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, RELC Journal, European Journal of Education, and Australian Review of Applied Linguistics. I currently serve as Associate Editor of Language and Education (SSCI), Cogent Education (ESCI/Scopus), and as editorial board member of several leading journals in applied linguistics and language education. I have been listed among the World’s Top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University since 2023 and recognised as a highly cited Chinese scholar on Elsevier’s list from 2021 – 2025.
