Hello, my name is Archie, and I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language Education. My experiences of learning and teaching foreign languages in my home country, Kazakhstan, inspired my research interest in how students learn languages through the digital tools and spaces available to them, often described as Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE). In my work, I draw on perspectives from learner autonomy, technology-supported teaching and learning, and motivational and educational psychology, with the aim of fostering contextually relevant, sustainable, and student-centred practices that empower language learners and support educators.
Over the past few years, I have focused on how students’ basic psychological needs, beliefs, and emotions shape EFL learners’ engagement with IDLE, as well as on the connections between their in-class learning and their learning beyond the classroom. I am also very interested in language educators’ experiences, particularly how they navigate innovations such as AI tools and informal learning practices in their teaching. I enjoy collaborating on projects that mix quantitative and qualitative approaches, and I am keen to support PhD students who want to connect “big ideas” from theory with real classroom or out-of-class practices in different contexts. If you are interested in topics such as informal language learning, CALL and AI in language education, L2 motivation or learner autonomy, I would be very happy to hear from you and discuss possible PhD projects.
