Prof Angel Ma, Associate Professor from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies, Faculty of Humanities, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 TESOL Award for Excellence in Research by TESOL International Association. This esteemed award recognises her ground-breaking article published in British Journal of Educational Technology:
Ma, Q., & Lee, H. T. H., Gao, X., & Chai, C.-S. (2024). Learning by design: Enhancing online collaboration in developing pre-service TESOL teachers’ TPACK for teaching with corpus technology. British Journal of Educational Technology. 55(6), 2639-2667 (https://doi.org/10.1111/bjet.13458)
Prof Ma’s research introduces a novel approach to cultivating pre-service TESOL teachers' Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in corpus technology, also known as Corpus-Based Language Pedagogy (CBLP). The study uniquely explores the impact of online collaborative learning, driven by a learning-by-design methodology, on CBLP development. Through analysis of both intra- and inter-group interactions, the research illuminates the collaborative knowledge construction process. Importantly, the findings demonstrate the efficacy of online collaboration in advancing pre-service teachers' understanding and practical application of corpus technology in language education.
Prof Ma presented a featured session and delivered the keynote address at the 2025 TESOL Convention Graduate Student Forum on 19 March 2025. She has also been featured in TESOL Connections.
