Last winter, a city that impressed me was Dongguan, a vibrant city in Guangdong Province, China. The trip which was organised by the University gave me an opportunity to deeply understand China's culture, history, and scenic beauty. Walking through museums, I was moved by the stories of resilience and sacrifice. They conveyed the unwavering spirit of the Chinese people during challenging periods. The legacy of Lin Zexu, a national hero who stood firm against foreign aggression, left a particularly strong impression on me. His determination and moral courage symbolised the strength of the Chinese nation. Similarly, the bravery of the warriors who fought in the historic sea battles filled me with profound respect for their sacrifices. The exhibits in the museums faded after a long time, but the spirit of Lin Zexu and the courage of the warriors gradually became clear and profound in my mind.
Dongguan's ancient pavilions and trees not only highlight its historical weight but also reflect the beauty of its landscape. As I wandered through the old village, I marvelled at the craftsmanship of the buildings, many of which were adorned with intricate carvings and traditional decorations. The scenery was breathtaking, and I took the chance to capture the beauty of the landscape through photography, hoping to preserve the memories of it. The experience of being in such an attractive environment allowed me to reflect on the importance of heritage and the need to protect cultural sites for future generations.
After visiting the renowned landscaped Keyuan, I was immediately struck by the finely carved brickwork and trees. The arrangement of rocks, water features, and plants creates a special cultural atmosphere that is truly mesmerising. I learnt about the principles of traditional Chinese garden design, which emphasise harmony, balance, and the integration of natural elements. The mysteries of the garden can only be better appreciated when you connect yourself to nature.
This trip inspired me to continue exploring and learning about different cultures while helping to pass on traditional culture to preserve cultural heritage.
