Ms Wong Man-wai, Year 4 Student from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language in 2024/25
When I learned that my Field Experience involved teaching advanced Chinese to foreigners, I worried about my abilities and set off for Beijing with a mix of nervousness and excitement, ready to embrace a summer full of challenges. During my internship at Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), I had many first-time experiences. I gave a speech as the class representative at the welcome ceremony, prepared teaching plans for two classes on my own, and faced a group of unfamiliar foreign students, some even older than me. These experiences not only enhanced my teaching skills but also made me aware of my limitations, giving my teaching more practical relevance.
Outside the classroom, my summer was filled with laughter. I remember one evening when I had dinner with my students, and we played ‘Werewolf’ and ‘Who’s the Undercover’ in Chinese. That shared language broke down cultural barriers. This Field Experience also strengthened my bonds with my peers. We shared meals, revised teaching plans, had a ‘city walk’ in Beijing, and visited the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, creating wonderful memories. Overall, this Field Experience in Beijing was a valuable opportunity for personal growth and breaking boundaries. While exploring the capital city, I gained insights into the diverse cultures of my country, which broadened my horizons. This month’s rewards included not only teaching experience but also a wealth of memories and friendships.
