The Department of Linguistics and Modern Language Studies and the Centre for Research on Linguistics and Language Studies organised the second School of Cantonese Studies on 15 and 16 May 2021. The theme of the School was “Studies of Cantonese in the Digital Age”. In this two-day event, speakers of the School introduced some up-to-date Cantonese studies involving digital technologies, such as corpus-based research, online tools and resources for Cantonese studies, and digital processing of Cantonese corpus data.
The two-day event was very well received by the 100 participants coming from Canada, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, mainland China, Norway, Russia, Taiwan, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States etc. There were four sessions covering the following topics: Some Frontiers in Cantonese Corpus-based Research (keynote speech by Professor Benjamin Tsou, Emeritus Professor from the City University of Hong Kong), a discussion forum on Linguistic Issues in Constructing Cantonese Corpora, a workshop on Digital Processing of Cantonese Corpus Data, and demonstrations of Cantonese Digital Resources and Tools and Cantonese Learning Apps.
