2018/19 has been another successful period of research, teaching, and community engagement for the Department of Literature and Cultural Studies (LCS). Among many highlights, the Department was delighted to learn that in September 2018, Dr David Kang Jong Hyuk, Assistant Professor and Associate Head of LCS, was the recipient of the University Grants Committee Teaching Award, a major accomplishment that LCS has been celebrating all year. Inspired by performances like that of Dr Kang, the Department has continued to focus on providing excellent instruction at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and also continued the track record of securing external grant funding, as well as the good practice of using departmental resources to support projects in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. In addition, members have organised and participated in dozens of academic, literary, and cultural events both on and off campus. As the Department has continued to develop on the basis of past practices, it also prepared a self-evaluation and underwent the process of departmental review for the first time. The external review panel was chaired by Professor James Steintrager (University of California, Irvine, the United States) and members included Professor Brigitte Glaser (University of Göttingen, Germany) and Professor Fan Ming Ju (National Taiwan University, Taiwan). Local expertise and insight were provided by Mr To Kar Hing, principal of Buddhist Wing Yan School. The panel expressed appreciation of the Department’s many accomplishments in recent years and offered constructive feedback about how to move forward. LCS looks forward to 2019/20 and the new opportunities the year will bring.
