My Artistic Evolution as a Cross-Disciplinary Musician
Mr Lee Chun Lok Gordon
BA in Creative Arts and Culture (2014)
Studying at the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Culture (BA(CAC)) programme was pivotal in shaping my artistic journey. Unlike conventional music programmes that focus on a single art form or instrument, BA(CAC) emphasises cross-disciplinary learning, providing students with knowledge and training in different art forms, cultural literacy, and arts management. This broad approach inspired me to integrate different artistic disciplines and explore new ways of expression. After graduation, I travelled extensively, learning from harmonica masters in Vienna and Chicago. These experiences enriched my technique and inspired my creative pursuits.
I integrated the playing techniques of Eastern and Western musical instruments, incorporating techniques from the Chinese musical instrument ‘Sheng’ into my harmonica performances, which became my signature style. My innovative approach paid off when I won multiple awards, including the championship at the 2017 World Harmonica Festival in Germany—the most prestigious international competition held every four years.
Today, I perform at various events and collaborate with musicians worldwide. I’m also dedicated to developing and exploring the possibilities of the harmonica, and one of my biggest milestones is the invention of a new double resonance harmonica. Beyond performing, I actively participate in social programmes—helping the elderly and children improve their lung capacity through harmonica training. This work earned me the Music Advocacy Award from the International Society for Music Education.
Throughout my journey, my teachers at HKIEd provided invaluable connections and support, many of whom I still collaborate with today. Their guidance helped me realise my artistic vision and continue pushing boundaries.
My advice to current students is simple: dare to explore new horizons. Think outside the box, embrace failure as part of growth, and stay true to your passion. This spirit of innovation and resilience perfectly embodies the ethos of the Faculty of Humanities. With courage and curiosity, you can turn your dreams into reality.
