ECE students win big at Prospective Teachers Awards

2022-06-23

ECE students won 9 awards at the Hong Kong Outstanding Prospective Teachers Awards last month as their teaching abilities and passion for education impressed the judges.

BEd(ECE) student Li Yan Wing was the only Gold Award winner in the kindergarten category. Her board game not only taught students how to use QR Codes, but they also learned fun facts about plants. “QR codes are showing up everywhere nowadays,” said Yan Wing. “The board game helps to illustrate what a QR Code is and how they work. This helps children gain real-life learning experiences, and develop an understanding of basic technology and our society.”

Lam Sue, also a BEd(ECE) student, won Silver. She created a picture book, and integrated musical instruments, games and e-learning materials into her storytelling activities. “I’ve always dreamed of being a kindergarten teacher,” said Sue. “I love exploring different teaching approaches, especially in music education. This competition enabled me to put into practice what I have learnt in the past five years.”

PGDE(ECE) student To Lai Sze also won Silver. “The competition allowed me to receive direct feedback from kindergarten principals,” she said. “Their feedback was practical and will help improve my teaching skills for my future career." She used picture books and tailor-made props to teach her students about healthy eating habits and the dangers of obesity.

Other awardees included:

  • Leung Mei Ying, (Bronze Award, HD(ECE) student)
  • Leung Sin Tung, (Bronze Award, HD(ECE) student)
  • Lam Nga Lok, (Merit Award, BEd(ECE) student)
  • Shum Yan Lam, (Merit Award, BEd(ECE) student)
  • Wong Wai Ki, (Merit Award, PGDE(ECE) student)

The awards were organised by the Hong Kong Prospective Teachers Association and the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association. The award presentation ceremony was held on 28 May.
