Shynar Baimaganbetova is a PhD student in the EPL Department. She received her BA and MSc degrees from Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan. Prior to joining the EdUHK, Shynar worked as an EFL instructor with young and adult learners. Her recent work experience involve a professional development program where she served as a trainer for English language teachers from vulnerable rural populations. Shynar’s current research project centers on youth aspirations and life transitions. Apart from academic life, she is passionate about interior and fashion design, mindful living, and dumplings.

Xeniya Belova is a PhD student at the Education University of Hong Kong. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Teaching English from the Eurasian National University in Astana, and her Master's Degree in Multilingual Education from Nazarbayev University in Astana.

Prior to entering EduHK, Xeniya worked as an administrator at Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education.

Xeniya is passionate about research and her research project, which explores communication in multilingual and multicultural education environments in Kazakhstan and Hong Kong. Among non-research interests, she enjoys reading, learning foreign languages, traveling and painting.

Jet took his Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology with distinction at Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila, Philippines where he also worked as the Student Research Coordinator and a Psychology instructor at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

A licensed psychologist and psychometrician, Jet completed his Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology from Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, Philippines. He became involved in research projects related to parenting and adolescent decision-making.

As a graduate student, he is currently working on research projects in Positive Youth Development (PYD) and adolescent mental health.

CAI Qiuyun is currently an M.Phil. student in the ECE Department. She received her master’s degree in Chinese Linguistics and Language Acquisition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and her bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University. She worked as a research assistant at the CUHK and the City University of Hong Kong from 2019 to 2022 on a number of research projects in the early language development of monolingual and multilingual children, first language acquisition, and parent-child input-outcome relationships.

She enjoys traveling, hiking, and watching TV series.

Melissa is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Early Childhood Education. She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at City University of Hong Kong. After graduation, she secured a position as a research assistant at The Education University of Hong Kong. Being a research assistant had inspired her to take up the challenge of a Ph.D. Melissa’s research interests are the social-cognitive and social-emotional development in young children. I graduated from Northeast Normal University with a Master’s degree in Psychology. My Master’s thesis explored morphemic ambiguity as a significant factor to investigate morpho-semantic processing in Chinese word recognition. Currently, I am working on visual statistical learning from a developmental perspective in pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology. My research focuses on exploring neural mechanisms associated with Chinese orthographic statistical learning by using event-related potentials (ERPs). Apart from academic work, I am very passionate about reading and swimming.

I am a first year Ph.D. student from the Philippines. My research interests include the emotional regulation of academic emotions, and its impact on engagement and learning outcomes. 

I worked as a research assistant in EdUHk for 1 year prior to my studies and was a research coordinator in a graduate school in the Philippines for 2 years. I like analyzing data and sharing my research with academics and practitioners. I’m looking forward to my studies at EdUHK!

Zhen received her BA in Hispanic Studies at Boston College and her MA in Social Sciences at the University of Chicago. Witnessing and experiencing the educational realities in the U.S., Latin America, and different regions in China has been a great asset to her and fueled her passion for educational research.

Prior to becoming a Ph.D. student, Zhen experienced teaching in an education company, a public middle school, and a university's English faculty. Working with diverse student groups broadened her perspectives on learning and teaching.

Salomey is an educator with 8 years experience in the field of Education in her home country, Liberia. She has worked as a Science teacher, a university lecturer, a STEM instruction coordinator, and a teacher trainer with public, private, local and international organizations. HO Cheuk Ming Hades received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. After ten years of working as a corporate trainer, Outward Bound instructor, secondary school vice-principal and playgroup teacher, he started to pursue the postgraduate degree in Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. I am so blessed to be admitted as a PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the Education University of Hong Kong. Before studying a PhD, I have obtained my Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Mainland China. I felt deeply benefited from studying in the field of psychology for approximately eight years. I enjoyed it very much as it equipped me with practical skills to develop solutions for different problems facing the world today. Silvia Natale is a Ph.D. student at SEC. She received her BSc from the Polytechnic University of Milan, her teaching qualification from the University of Sunderland, and her Master’s degree in Psychology from Manchester University (UK). Before joining the EdUHK, Silvia worked as an International School teacher and Education Consultant for a British University. Her recent work experience involved mentoring and assessing PGCE trainee teachers at various schools in Hong Kong. She has also been working as a research assistant at EdUHK on positive educational interventions. Silvia’s most recent research project centers on mindfulness for teachers and parents of children with neurodiversities (ADHD, ASD). PAN is currently a Ph.D. student in ECE. She is also one of the 2022-2023 Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) award-winners. She started playing the piano at the age of four and with outstanding performance, she obtained her Master of Arts degree in Music and Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education at Xinghai Conservatory of Music. With a great passion for Early Childhood Music Education (ECME), she accumulated teaching experiences in preschools, music studios, and universities and obtained the Orff Music Course Tutor certificate. PAN is dedicated to research in ECME and will focus her doctoral study in this area.

Charla Rochella S. Saamong has an extensive teaching experience in the field of early childhood in the Philippines, particularly in the UP Child Development Center- a laboratory school for children from infancy until the age of six. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Family Life and Child Development, a Master’s degree in Psychology and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Education with a research focus on children’s movements and environments. Miss WU Xiaoyuan graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) from East China Normal University and Nanjing Normal University respectively. Now she will continue the ECE research at the Education University of Hong Kong. She believes that effective early childhood education is able to bring children a sweet and fruitful childhood, which makes it a discipline worthy for Xiaoyuan to pursue lifelong learning.

The precious research experience provided me insights on how the physical environments impact an individual’s psychological states. I am from Henan, China. Graduating from the Education University of Hong Kong with a Master’s degree in Education, I have worked in Sanya Aviation and Tourism College as a lecturer for three years, specializing in for Civil Aviation Transportation. Currently, I am working on reading comprehension issues and am pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology. My research focuses on the role of social-emotional factors and linguistic skills on reading comprehension in both monolingual and bilingual children, and on reading difficulties among left-behind children.

Xinying received her Master’s degree in Child and Family Education from EdUHK and Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology from HKBU. Prior to starting her Ph.D. journey, she worked as a research assistant at an ECE research institute.

Based on her previous study and work experience, she believes that family plays a significant role in child development. Thus, she is excited to explore how family influences child development and support parents to enhance their parenting practice. She hopes to interact with people who share similar research interests.

Kai is from Shanghai, China. He has graduated from the University of Glasgow with a Master’s degree in MSc Educational Studies. Prior to joining the EdUHK, he worked as a principal in an educational institution in China. His job responsibility included ensuring a safe learning environment where each child can receive prompt and appropriate academic support.

He is passionate about inclusive education and to work with educators and families to promote social justice. He conducts his PhD research by looking at teachers’ conceptions on gifted and talented young children.

Mona obtained her master’s degree at the East China Normal University and her bachelor degree at Henan University. Her previous research interests included educational equality, school bullying, and school modernization within both primary and secondary schools. 

At present, she is a PhD student of the Department of Education Policy and Leadership. Her research areas involve instructional leadership, distributed leadership, and teacher leadership in mainland China.

She is a cheerful and optimistic person. Like many people, she also loves music, watching movies, travelling to new places, enjoying delicious food, playing games and so on.

As a researcher without work experience, she often feels intrigued by educational problems in schools and society. So, if you also have a passion for education, you are most welcome to communicate with her.

Xingzhou is a Ph.D. student in PS. He received his Master’s degree in Social Work from City University of Hong Kong. Prior to pursuing his doctoral degree, he worked as a Research Assistant for over 4 years in Hong Kong. His previous research focused on the psychosocial well-being and development of children and adolescents. At present, his research interest primarily lies in the field of cyberbullying. In his leisure time, he likes doing sports, especially jogging and playing basketball.
