Dr Ronnel B. King wins the Michael Harris Bond Early Career Award


Assistant Professor of C&I Dr Ronnel B. King has been awarded the Michael Harris Bond Early Career Award by the Asian Association of Social Psychology. The award is given to early career researchers who have made significant contributions to Asian social psychology. 
Dr. King’s work focuses on uncovering the factors that underpin student motivation and well-being and developing positive psychology interventions to cultivate these optimal psychological states. He has published more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, and edited books and his work has appeared in the most prestigious journals in his field.

The award recognises Dr King's work on uncovering the socio-cultural aspects of student motivation by using a culturally informed perspective to understand motivation and learning in Asian settings. This is reflected in his book, “The Psychology of Asian Learners: A Festschrift in Honour of David Watkins” (Springer) and a special issue he has guest edited in the British Journal of Educational Psychology. 
Dr King also delivered a keynote speech, “The Great Divide: How Income Inequality Harms Student Motivation and Achievement". It focused on how income inequality shapes educational achievement across countries and the temporal relations between inequality and educational achievement, a collaborative project he did with Prof. Ming Ming Chiu, Chair Professor in SEC. 
Dr King said “I feel very honoured and grateful to receive the Michael Bond Award, named after one of the giants of Asian social psychology. I have been attending the Asian Association of Social Psychology conference for the past 10 years and never thought I will be the one to give a keynote this year as part of my award. Even more interesting was the fact that two of my mentors Prof Tina Montiel, my undergraduate thesis supervisor, and Prof Allan Bernardo, one of my most important mentors during my PhD, were in the audience so I feel this is also one way to honour my teachers who have taught me so much. I also feel very grateful to EDUHK’s FEHD for the support it has given me. I thank my mentors and collaborators who have made research interesting, fun, and meaningful”
