2025-05-28

The Faculty of Education and Human Development (FEHD) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) organised the inaugural Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Student Innovative Teaching (GHMUSIT) Competition. Held in collaboration with South China Normal University (SCNU) and the University of Macau (UM), the competition formed part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Teacher Education, which was established in 2024. Bringing together over 40 pre-service teachers from Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong, the event showcased innovative teaching ideas focusing on global citizenship education and a more interconnected and responsible educational community.

Dr Jan Gube, Assistant Dean (International Engagement) of FEHD, opened the event by emphasising the importance of integrating global citizenship education into the K-12 curriculum. He highlighted the essential role of educators in fostering belonging and shared responsibility for a sustainable future.

Professor Zhou Mingming, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Education at UM, expressed gratitude to EdUHK for hosting the event and commended the students’ enthusiastic participation. Ms Tan Weihong, Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation at SCNU, also stressed the value of cross-institutional collaboration in addressing global and educational challenges.

Thirteen shortlisted teams delivered final presentations to a panel of judges, including Professor Zhou from UM, Professor Zhuo Zelin from SCNU, and Dr Tina Gao from EdUHK. Each team demonstrated critical thinking and creativity in their lesson plans, aiming to enhance student learning, engagement, and outcomes.

During the award ceremony, Professor Zhuo praised the students for their innovative teaching strategies, particularly for embedding empathy, social justice, and civic responsibility into their lesson plans.

Four teams received the “Best Lesson Plans” award:

  • The Education University of Hong Kong: 我們的環球旅行卡 (Our Global Travel Card)
  • South China Normal University: 愛護地球 共同責任 (Protecting the Earth is a Shared Responsibility)
  • University of Macau: 藻類「淨」化論 (Algae Purification Theory)
  • Dongguan University of Technology: 喜看稻菽千重浪 (Joyfully Watching the Waves of Rice and Grains)

In her closing remarks, Professor Zhou reiterated the importance of global citizenship education in shaping future educators and encouraged participants to expand their innovative ideas beyond the competition. She also announced that the second GHMUSIT Competition will take place at the University of Macau, focusing on critical thinking in the era of AI.
