In recent years, mental health challenges for children and youth in Hong Kong have been sounding the alarm bell about the promotion of local mental health initiatives. The Center for Child and Family Science of the EdUHK recently published the “Positive Mental Well-being Booklet”, in line with the "4Rs Mental Health Charter" launched by the Education Bureau, aiming to help kindergarten teachers, parents and social workers strengthen their positive mindset, thereby enhancing children's well-being and mental health.
The Booklet is a meaningful outcome of the “EASP: Early Advancement in Social-Emotional Health and Positivity Project” (the Project), and is jointly compiled and designed by the Centre Director, Professor Kevin Chung, and his research team. Transforming the Project’s research findings into practical applications, the Booklet includes a set of positive education information, as well as a mobile application for teachers and parents to use in different scenarios.
The mobile application contains "teacher" and "parent" interfaces. Both of which contain training information, practical exercises, games, situational theater, and other educational activities and resources. The content-rich resources support kindergarten teachers and parents in applying and practicing positive education, so as to help children build positive character and develop positive thinking.
The Project has been launched since 2020. Using "PROSPER" as the design framework, the Project promotes Positivity, Relationship, Outcome, Strength, Purpose, and Resilience, with an aim to bring positive impact to children, families and communities. The Project has so far engaged 206 pre-service kindergarten teachers, 479 in-service kindergarten teachers, 83 international school kindergarten teachers, 120 local parents and 84 kindergarten social workers, and achieved remarkable outcomes.
