Peking University Academics Visit EdUHK – Deepening Collaborative Engagement

Prof Jia Jiyou, Head of the Department of Educational Technology at the Graduate School of Education at Peking University (PKU), led a team of three postgraduate students on a visit to the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) from 29 April to 3 May. The visit aimed to deepen collaborative ties within the ongoing “Technology-Enabled Futures of Education: Harnessing Emerging Technologies to Enhance Equity, Quality, and Efficiency” project, which was launched in March 2023.

The visit began with a project meeting chaired by Prof. Lim Cher Ping, Associate Dean (International Engagement) of FEHD. Prof. Bruce Macfarlane, Dean of FEHD, welcomed the participants with an opening address. The meetings focused on reviewing progress, planning future activities within the project’s framework, and exploring new collaborative opportunities in the longer term.

One of the highlights of the visit was an onsite seminar delivered by Prof. Jia Jiyou, entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Education: Opportunities, Challenges, and Strategies”. The seminar, followed by a panel discussion led by Dr Song Yanjie, Associate Professor at MIT and Dr Zhu Jinxin, Assistant Professor at C&I, sparked lively discussions on the role of generative AI in education.

The collaborative atmosphere continued into the Postgraduate Student Seminar on 2 May, where six students from both universities presented their research findings, fostering enhanced communication and mutual understanding.

During a tour of the AI Education Laboratory and Metaverse Education Lab at EdUHK, the PKU team also explored the FastGPT platform and the educational applications of the Spatial metaverse gaming platform, gaining insights into practical educational implementations.

The visit concluded with a consensus on the importance of leveraging emerging technologies to improve educational equity, quality, and efficiency through international collaboration.

Discussions during the visit set the stage for the next phase of collaboration, with the promise of continued partnership between the two universities, thereby strengthening educational ties between Hong Kong and mainland China.
