On 5 March 2026, the Department of Education Policy and Leadership had the honour of hosting a seminar presented by Dr Helen Choen Yin Chan, a Research Fellow at the Manchester Institute of Education, University of Manchester. The seminar, titled “The Shaping Influence of Education in Chinese Migrant Families in England,” was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr Weiyan Xiong.
The event attracted over 30 academic staff and postgraduate students, participating both online and in person. This presentation examines how education shapes migrant Chinese families in England, focusing on parent-child communication. Drawing from a doctoral study of five families, it highlights education's importance, intergenerational tensions, and offers insights for English schools to better support these families.
