Life and Values Education Study Tour in Taiwan

2026-01-28

The Life and Values Education Taiwan Study Tour, led by Dr. CHENG Tak-lai Mic, took place from 18 to 23 December 2025. This enriching and thought-provoking educational tour centred on life education, death awareness, grief healing, and humanistic reflection. Our participants journeyed through a carefully curated sequence of experiences in and around Taipei, starting with practical applications of Life and Values Education in schools and universities, moving to broader cultural and historical insights via museums, and culminating in a profoundly personal confrontation with mortality.

We were honoured to collaborate with the Association for Education on Life Enlightenment, which provided all participants with a brief introduction to life values education. At Taipei Municipal Songshan High School, participants observed classroom teaching that seamlessly weaves life education into students' daily learning, fostering empathy, resilience, and personal growth. In addition, participants explored the Grief Healing Garden at the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences — a dedicated space for processing grief and loss. Building on these practical foundations, we also visited the Museum of World Religions and the National 228 Memorial Museum to broaden perspectives.

The tour reached its most intense and transformative point with the “Death Experience” at Jen-Teh Junior College of Medicine, Nursing and Management. Participants immersed themselves in simulated end-of-life scenarios — writing wills, taking legacy photos, donning burial attire, lying in coffins, and contemplating mortality. This hands-on encounter prompted deep introspection on the fragility of life, the importance of living with intention, and a renewed respect for both living and dying. Overall, this tour was far more than a series of visits. It was a progressive journey of self-discovery and appreciation for life's precious, interconnected nature.
