GBA Trip: BSc(EM) Students Explore Guangzhou’s Vibrant Culture and Dynamic Development

2026-01-15

From December 16 to 17, 2025, 44 students from the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Executive Management (BSc(EM)) programme embarked on a two-day educational journey to Guangzhou. The immersive visit aimed to deepen students’ understanding of Guangzhou’s rich cultural heritage and rapid development, while providing valuable insights into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The trip began with a visit to Shamian Island, renowned for its picturesque European-style colonial architecture and storied history. As students explored the island, they gained a deeper appreciation of the cultural and historical connections between Shamian Island and Hong Kong. They also witnessed how the island strikes a balance between tourism and heritage conservation, especially in light of the recent National Games hosted by the GBA, which brought vibrant decorations and international visitors to the area.

The group continued their cultural exploration in Yongqing Fang and Shangxiajiu, iconic destinations in Guangzhou’s historic Xiguan district. Students were fascinated by the distinctive Verandah-type shophouses and Lingnan gardens, which show the unique history and culture of the area. At the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, they discovered the development and enduring charm of Cantonese opera, a recognized intangible cultural heritage. These visits helped students understand the shared cultural roots among GBA cities and offered new perspectives on the historical development of their own city, Hong Kong.

In the evening, students enjoyed a scenic night cruise along the Pearl River, where they admired the city’s blend of historical landmarks and modern skyline, reflecting Guangzhou’s transformation into an international metropolis.

On the second day, the group visited Guangzhou Tianhe Foreign Language School, where they toured the campus and its innovative facilities, including the Youth Leadership Education Centre(Automotive Laboratory) established in collaboration with GAC Toyota. Students learned how the school integrates automotive industry partnerships to foster creative thinking and holistic development, providing hands-on experiences in physics, design, and 3D printing. School Deputy Secretary Huang shared insights into the school’s management philosophy, student development strategies, and teacher training approaches, and answered students’ questions.

The Assistant Professor Dr Jess Luo and the BSc(EM) Programme leader Mr Martin Lam presented the Certificate of Appreciation to Huang Nanshou, the Deputy Secretary of the Guangzhou Tianhe Foreign Language School

The group then explored the Guangdong Provincial Museum, where they delved into the region’s historical and cultural evolution. The guided tour offered multiple perspectives on the history of Hong Kong and other GBA cities, such as the origins of Hong Kong’s name and the development of port cities within the region. Students were encouraged to adopt a critical thinking approach and a national perspective in understanding the cultural development of the GBA and Chinese Mainland as a whole.

This visit provided students with authentic learning experiences, enriching their understanding of the Greater Bay Area’s dynamic cultural and economic landscape. Through direct engagement with local initiatives, historical sites, and educational institutions, students returned with a deeper appreciation for the region’s vibrant heritage and innovative spirit.
