Saskia Van Viegen (Stille), PhD (OISE/University of Toronto)
My work in applied linguistics and English language education focuses on bi/multilingualism in education. Specific areas of interest include translanguaging pedagogies, language assessment, literacy development, and language and content integrated teaching and learning. Drawing on research developed across multiple scales of inquiry in schools, school districts and education systems, I am interested in efforts to re-vision education from a multilingual perspective and promote system-level curriculum reform.
Current projects focus on student self-assessment of their multilingual language development and development of multilingual approaches to assessment in education. Recently completed studies include examination of language teaching and learning in multilingual university contexts, language and literacy practices of youth from refugee backgrounds, and processes of academic language socialization.
Publications from my research and scholarship appear in several edited books and journals, including Language Assessment Quarterly, Journal of English for Academic Purposes, European Journal of Teacher Education, TESOL Quarterly, Language, Culture & Curriculum, and others. I co-edited the book Plurilingual Pedagogies: Critical and Creative Undertakings for Equitable Language (in) Education (Lau & Van Viegen, 2020) and am currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Critical Inquiry in Language Studies.
